Valtellina, a world between the AlpsIt wouldn’t be enough to describe Valtellina as a valley. It would be better to consider it a world tucked away in the Alps. Would it be an exaggeration? Valtellina borders the provinces of Como and Lecco to the west, Trentino Alto Adige to the east, the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia to the south and Switzerland to the north. It is crossed by the river Adda, surrounded by imposing mountains, like Bernina and Adamello and extraordinarily fascinating smaller valleys where tiny villages are spread out. Sondrio is the heart of Valtellina. The town, of Roman origins, is very fascinating and has many interesting points to discover: walking through the many tight alleys of the old town centre you can admire old palaces, like the Hotel Posta or discover the tiny squares like Piazza Quadrivio, from where you can enjoy a lovely view of the beautiful surrounding peeks. Following these peeks you get to Valmalenco, dominated by the mountainous groups of Disgrazia, Bernina and Pizzo Scalino. Chiesa in Valmalenco, Caspoggio and Lanzada constitute a tourist area with good hotel, leisure and sport facilities: alpine skiing and cross-country skiing during the winter period while offering many trekking routes and mountaineering in the summer. Driving along the Strada Statale dello Stelvio you can find many villages rich in nature and history. For example Aprica, modern resort dominated by winter sports in winter, where Valtellina and Valcamonica meet. Further north are Tirano, Grosio, Livigno and Bormio, important tourist resorts popular in the winter and summer. At last the Stelvio National Park, surrounded by an exceptionally beautiful nature. Driving in the opposite direction, there are other places worth to be mentioned, like Val Masino, well known for climbing; Morbegno, well known for its oeno-gastronomic initiatives (like “Morbegno in Cantina” (historic cellars of Morbegno open to the public, offering tastings of wines and local products). There is also the Valchiavenna that situated at the mouth of the S. Giacomo Valley better known as Valle Spluga up to the Valle del Reno. The list continues with Teglio; Madesimo and Campodolcino without mentioning the many trekking routes on the Orobie Alps. This is enough for now, isn’t it? |
