Bormio Terme

To be a tourist in Valtellina means to immerse into its luxuriant nature, protected by parks and reserves; explore wonderful landscapes in a region rich in history and tradition. But whoever wants to be a real tourist in Valtellina, cannot miss out on a visit to Bormio Terme, for a romantic day out, for a moment of complete relaxation or for a great scented massage.

Bormio has always been famous for its thermal waters since the Roman Age: for example we can read Cassiodoro’s reports, in which he mentions these thermal waters, exalting its curative properties. Nowadays Bormio has become the favourite destination for people looking for the right equilibrium between sport and relaxation on a holiday in the mountain.

The hot waters derive from the rocks of the Mount Reit at different altitudes ranging from 1250 to 1480 metres above sea level. The waters flow from 9 different springs at a temperature between 37° and 43°C, according to the season: hotter in winter, because there is a ground ice that obstructs the percolation of rainwater and with varying degrees in summer, depending on the atmospheric rainfall. The chemical composition of the waters includes sulphate, alkaline and some radioactive elements which contribute to the regenerating, detoxifying, anti-inflammatory and anti-stress effect on the person.

There are 3 thermal spa centres open all year round: Bormio Terme, Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi, offering approx. 70 spa treatments suitable for those who wish to enjoy a totally relaxing romantic moment, including numerous outdoor pools and baths, offering a beautiful natural setting, especially under a heavy snowfall! Hydro massages, mud therapy, Vichy showers, relaxation baths, water fountains, cascades, ice treatments, saunas, Jacuzzi, Turkish baths and steam rooms, are just some of the treatments that you can find here.

In the Bagni Vecchi (Old bagni) you can also find the Grotta Sudatoria: a natural steam cave sauna, exclusive and unique in the world, a detoxifying route that takes place in two tunnels which penetrate into the rock for over 50 metres.

What if you don’t have a lot of time and you don’t know what to choose? Well…for who likes the antique, I would recommend the Bagni Vecchi: romantic, spectacular, ideal for complete relaxation and a dive into the history. Bormio Terme instead are ideal for who wants to swim, recommended for children. The Bagni Nuovi are good when it’s nice weather, ideal for a romantic getaway.
