Morgex, Heart of the ValdigneFifty kilometres of crests, pinnacles, ice floes, from south-west to north-east, that touch the sky with 3816 meters of the Dente del Gigante, 4201 m of Grandes Jorasses and 4810 of Monte Bianco. This is what you can see from Morgex, the heart of Valdigne, small village situated in Valle d’Aosta, at 920m of altitude, laid on a wonderful plain, surrounded by woods, fields, vine yards and crossed by the river Dora.  It is located in a strategic position reachable via motorway, which is very near, at 28km from the city of Aosta and 9km from Courmayeur, well connected to north Italy, close to the Mont Blanc Tunnel that links the region to France and can be reached easily also from Switzerland.
We walk along the streets of Morgentium, among the ruins of the castles and medieval towers. The safe of the Bozel family at Villair, the Pascal castle, La Ruine and the lovely Tour de l’Architet in the town centre are surely worth a visit. The parish church is also worth to be seen. Renowned in 1910 by the Ministry of Public Education as a monument rich in art and history, it is the eldest church of Valdigne. It’s now time for dinner. There is a wide selection of restaurants in the area, the Arcadia, il Cafe Quinson, Cave Du Vin Blanc e il Vacherie Club De La Nuit are all good restaurants, but if you are looking for something more simple, you can go to Pizzeria da Beppe. It’s an informal restaurant, nothing special inside, with typical large wooden tables with checked tablecloths. Besides pizza, you can taste local dishes belonging to the traditional cuisine, the prices are really good, even better if we think at the portions!!! The special home starters are a must: you can taste dried meet served on the classic wooden chopping board (you can help your self), local cheese and vegetables in oil. And then for a main course you can have a steak “alla valdostana”with vegetables and some nice fizzy wine Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, from the highest vineyards in Europe (reaching up to 1200m). After enjoyed our meal we go for another wonder in the square before going to bed. Tomorrow a new day begins. |
