Madesimo: ski, holidays and poetryIn the high valley of San Giacomo, Madesimo is the last town you get to leaving from Chiavenna, before you get to Spluga pass. (2113m). Today this village is a renowned holiday resort, offering a wide range of modern facilities, famous for mountain excursions and winter sports ![]() Madesimo offers over 50Kms of skiing slopes; for the more accomplished skier there is the famous “Canalone” , 2,7 km, considered to be one of the toughest runs in Europe. People can find also several mountain huts within the ski area that are warmly welcoming you for moment of relax. But Madesimo is not only for ski lovers. In fact there is a lot to discover here in the summer like in the winter, starting from a walk along the streets of the town centre, seeking for traces of the Italian poet Carducci, stopping by at the Osteria Vegia, old pub where the poet use to spend his evenings. The waterfalls of Groppera e Pianazzo just out side the centre are certainly worth to be seen. In Madesimo you will also be able to taste some local dishes in the typical “crotti”, natural caves formed by rocks and made in restaurants: bresaola (dry cow meat) , goat ham, local cheese, the pizzoccheri, and local sweets, like the torta di fioretto cake and the biscuits “di Prosto”; last but not the least id the rhododendron honey and the well-known grappa from San Giacomo valley. You can also choose snowshoe walks and hikes at daytime or under a full moon or decide to join the snowmobile excursions to discover some of the most magnificent panoramas that Madesimo offers: it’s possible to get as far as the, Passo dello Spluga, at 2000 metres incorporating dinner at Baita del Sole, a mountain refuge from where you can enjoy the imaginable viewpoint on the frozen lake and revive the poets verses. Carducci came to Madesimo the first time in 1898 and he composed many verses thanks to the mountains of Lombardy. |
